Should I Repair my Watch?
In some cases, you may have a watch that is beyond repair. When one component of a luxury or Swiss-made watch falls into disrepair, you may find that it is very expensive to fix. This is because:
- The movement is the most expensive part of many Swiss watches, the reason the watch is so highly valued in the first place.
- The movement is made up of parts that are all intricately integrated, and thus difficult or impossible to repair individually.
Rust is a killer
Read this, but do not read this when it is too late. Rust is the biggest killer of fine watches. That is why it is so important to keep your watch cleaned and well maintained.
Repair your watch yourself
This is easy in a number of cases, especially in the case of less expensive watches. When it comes to luxury watches, you will want to be very cautious, of course, as you can seriously damage the watch if you do not know what you are doing. There are a number of repairs that you can do quite simply, by yourself:You can repair or replace the watch band.
If the band is flat metal or leather, you will likely be able to replace it yourself. You simply use the sharp point of a knife or tweezers to pop out the springbar of the watch band, where it attaches to the watch case. In some cases where the leather is badly worn, it may be easiest to simply cut the band away from the watch case and springbar. In the case of a curved watch band, you should probably take it to a watch repair shop.
It is also quite easy to change your watch battery.
